A small, concentrated top tier
Cuba does have a luxury tier, but it is small and it is concentrated in two places: a handful of restored heritage hotels in Havana, and the newest five-star all-inclusives at the far east end of Varadero. There is no sprawling high-end market here, no glass-tower district — luxury in Cuba means a beautifully restored old building or a large modern beach resort, and knowing which is which before you book saves disappointment.
Havana's grand hotels
The capital's top tier is architectural. The Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski occupies a restored early-20th-century shopping arcade on Parque Central, with a rooftop pool over the old town; the storied Hotel Nacional commands the bluff above the Malecón with its gardens and history; and a growing set of boutique conversions turn colonial mansions across Habana Vieja into small luxury hotels. These are grand buildings in the heart of the city, priced to match the address.
Varadero's five-star strip
For beach luxury, the eastern tip of the Hicacos peninsula holds Varadero's largest and newest resorts — expansive five-star all-inclusives behind long private stretches of white sand, with the fuller range of pools, restaurants and spa facilities that the older strip lacks. This is where Cuba's high-end beach product concentrates, an easy transfer from Varadero's own airport or a two-hour drive from Havana.
What luxury does — and doesn't — mean here
Even the best hotels operate inside a constrained economy: almost everything is imported, occasional shortages reach every tier, and the cash culture means foreign cards often fail even where you'd least expect it. Expect genuine grandeur, warm and personal service, and beautiful buildings — but calibrate. A restored Havana palace is a different thing from an international glass-tower hotel, and travellers who understand that tend to love Cuba's luxury; those expecting a Dubai or a Miami do not.
What the high end buys
Luxury in Cuba is less about thread count than about access and atmosphere. At the top end it buys a rooftop pool over Old Havana, a table at the city's most sought-after paladares, a private cabana on the best stretch of Varadero, a cigar sommelier and a spa — and, crucially, the smoothest path through a country where logistics can be hard: reliable transfers, a concierge who finds what is scarce, backup power when the grid fails. What it cannot buy is exemption from the wider economy, so the smart high-end trip pairs the grand hotel with the real island beyond its doors.
The heritage conversions
Cuba's most distinctive luxury is not the big resort but the restored heritage hotel — grand old buildings brought back as small, characterful properties. In Havana, colonial mansions and early-20th-century landmarks across Habana Vieja have become boutique hotels of a few dozen rooms, run in partnership with international operators; in Trinidad and Remedios, a handful of colonial houses offer the same on a smaller scale. They trade the resort's facilities for something a beach hotel cannot sell: sleeping inside the history, on a real plaza, in a building that is itself the reason to come. For many travellers this, not the five-star strip, is what luxury in Cuba should mean.
